wHerE dOEs tHe SudDeN tWitTerMaNia cOMe fRoM?

Oh wow, that’s just amazing how Twitter got popular within the last month. I just wrote an article about how fast Kevin Rose’s number of followers grew within one year (from 30,000 to almost 90,000). That was only one month ago and now this: He has over 242,000 Followers. That’s incredible but where does the sudden boost come from?

Why is Twitter that popular all over the world now? My guess: A tragedy and a celebrity made the change. The tragedy: A plane crash, first reported on Twitter with the words:

“Holy Fucking Shit I Was Just In A Plane Crash!”

Due to the fact that Twitter was the fastest news publisher, it was mentioned in every TV news on December 21, 2008.

The celebrity? Ashton Kutcher a.k.a. aplusk, who became Twitter addicted thanks to Kevin Rose with whom Ashton Kutcher presented the 24 hours Sundance Festival challenge.

Kevin Rose was thitherto rank 2 after Barack Obama according to the number of his followers. Now he is “only” on position 9 behind Ashton Kutcher who has currently 256,174 followers and when I will be finished with writing, he probably will have more than 256,300 fans (256,302 - I checked it).

Twitter literally has its own walk of fame now with stars like Demi Moore, Diddy, MC Hammer or Shaq O’Neal and is more than an instant messenger for your current status report. - It’s a news provider and even more important, it’s also becoming a search engine. Recently, Twitter has added a search feature to its main page and now the founders of Google plus Facebook start worrying about the new competitor which is becoming hugher and hugher.
